Water beads are made from a polyacrylamide such as sodium polyacrylate, which is commonly known as a super absorbent polymer. Sodium polyacrylate is the absorbent material found in baby diapers. It has the ability to absorb as much as 200 to 300 times its mass in water.
Water beads are non-toxic. They are safe for kids, pets and the environment. They pose no danger of poisoning but are not meant to be consumed.
Water beads are commonly used for children play such as sensory bins but have many uses including but not limited to wedding and home décor, floral arrangements, soil alternative. Visit our "Instructions/Uses" page to find out more
Sensory bins can be any size you want to make them. The following is approximately how much volume of hydrated water beads you would get for each size package of non-hydrated:
10g = 4 cups = 1L
125g = 50 cups = 12L
250g = 100 cups = 24L
500g = 200 cups = 48L
1kg = 400 cups = 95L
Metal items like tongs and spoons, can be used in sensory bins but to avoid rusting, these items should be removed, rinsed and dried after play. We recommend using plastic items with water beads.
We recommend water beads used for play in sensory bins be washed frequently with mild soap and water. This will clean off any dirt, dust and oil left behind by hands and will extend the life of your water beads.
Water beads are a great soil alternative for plants. They will keep your plants hydrated as they slowly release water, potentially cutting down watering times to every 3-5 weeks. Some plants do better than others. We recommend not using water beads in any plant prone to root rot or thrive better in drier soil. Some plants that seem to do well with water beads as a soil alternative are ferns, bamboo, spider plants, peace lily, pothos.
Water beads will shrink over time as the water in them evaporates. To dehydrate them for later use, spread them out in a single layer and place in a warm, dry area. Do not put in direct sunlight as this will cause the water beads to break down. Depending on the area and number of water beads, dehydration can take 3-7 days. We do not recommend putting them in the oven.
Water beads can be enjoyed for months with regular use and care. There are many factors that will determine their life span including how often they are played with and cleaned, how they are stored and how often they have been hydrated and dehydrated. Water beads will break down over time.
Water beads are biodegradable and will break down over time. If you are done with your water beads, they can be mixed into the soil in your garden or thrown in the garbage. Do not put water beads in compost. DO NOT put water beads down any plumbing. They can expand more causing a blockage.
